Stauts Quo Bias and Football

On Friday I am headed to UW-LaCrosse to give a seminar that sprung out of some work I did with former student Joren Skugrud for the research symposium last year. Joren and I wrote a paper entitled, "Is there status quo bias? Evidence from two point conversion attempts in football?" Here's the abstract:

We examine use of the two point conversion in late game situations in NFL and NCAA Division I-A football. We allow for heterogeneity of teams and find that teams who are more successful running the football are also more successful with two point conversions. We find evidence that teams attempt one point conversions too often compared to the optimal strategy. This is consistent with a status quo bias where coaches are less willing to deviate from conventional approaches even when it is optimal to do so.

The paper is currently under review, and I'm especially hopeful for Joren that we can get it published.

College of Business Seminar Series

I wanted to announce the College of Business seminar series and invite anyone who is interested to attend. We have been bringing speakers from inside the COB and from nearby schools to give research seminars over the past two-plus years.

Phillip Miller from MSU-Mankato will be our next speaker this coming Tuesday, November 4. He'll be presenting his paper, Facility Age and Ownership in Major American Team Sports Leagues: The Effect on Team Franchise Values, at 3:00 in Somsen 106B. All are welcome.

For information on upcoming seminars, please see our COB Seminar Series page. I will post announcements here for upcoming seminars.

Welcome to the WSU-Research Blog

The purpose of this blog is to provide a space for Winona State University's (WSU) ongoing discussions on faculty-student research. It does not, however, intend to replace the regular discussion group's meetings or any WSU's official websites or activities.

Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

(Believe it or not, this is my very first blog ever. I never thought that I would write blogs, not to mention hosting a blog.)
